6 Tips to stay motivated at work

Have you ever had so much to do that you'd rather just take a nap and forget about everything? You have multiple tasks to complete and a deadline that's closing in. Instead of burying your head in the ground, take a deep breath and create a plan for yourself.

1. Write down your top 3 tasks you need to accomplish.

What are the most crucial tasks that have to be completed by the end of the day? Focus only on those tasks. Once completed, cross those off and then write 3 more tasks. Plan your day around these tasks. Remember to keep the number at 3 to keep from getting overwhelmed and stressed.

2. Practice the 50/10 technique.

Now that you have your tasks planned out, it's time to execute them. Begin working on the first task for 50 minutes and then take a 10 minute break to refocus. If more time is needed to take to complete the task, finish and take another 10 minute break before beginning the next task. Get up from your computer, stretch your legs and rest your eyes. It is unhealthy for your body and mind to be glued to your desk for the entire day.

3. Stay healthy.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! If I didn't say it enough, drink a lot of water throughout your work day. Keeping hydrated keeps you feeling fresh, alive and energetic. It also makes you take bathroom brakes which keeps you moving and let your eyes relax from your computer screen. It's no secrete that water is also very good for your skin. Adding fruits will give you an extra boost; cucumber, lemon or strawberries.

4. Use your colleagues.

You and your coworkers are a team and should operate as one. If you are overwhelmed on multiple projects, ask your coworkers if they have a lighter load and could assist you. Sometimes even just communicating out loud can help your thinking process. Colleagues can also be motivating through positive peer pressure. If your desk mate is doing well, it can motivate you to do better as well.

5. The power of words.

Positive affirmations can be beneficial and motivational. Surround your desk with your favorite quotes, say them out loud and let the universe hear what you want to happen. If you're trying to conquer a difficult project, try writing motivation on a Post It for yourself like "You can do this!" and stick it to your computer monitor. When you're feeling stressed, look at the note to remind yourself.

6. Celebrate wins, no matter how small.

It can be challenging to stay motivated and on top of things if you're constantly waiting for a long-term payoff. Treat yourself with small things and don't underestimate how gratifying it can feel to recognize little advancements. If you've completed a task or a difficult project, get an ice cream or your favorite treat that you don't normally get. Really make it a reward and think to yourself what you accomplished while enjoying that treat.
